Coagulation Cascade

Animation runtime: 3'52"
Delivery format(s): Booth loop, DVD, Flash for web

The coagulation cascade is an extremely complex process involving multiple interacting components. To animate it, our first challenge was to balance accuracy with simplicity, enabling us to show enough detail for medical accuracy, yet tell a simple, visually interesting story in a limited time frame.

A key animation sequence is the formation of an arterial blood clot. A mass of red blood cells and platelets becomes entwined in fibrin as the coagulation cascade takes effect. Illustrating this organic process required a range of modeling and animation techniques, often within a single shot! The finished sequence follows a single strand of fibrin as it develops, zooming out to view the whole clot in the fast-flowing blood stream as more red blood cells become attached.
